What to expect during radiation treatment

Radiation therapy is painless and typically delivered in multiple sessions called fractions. The total number of fractions depends on the cancer type and treatment plan.

Before treatment begins, you will undergo a planning session called a simulation. During this visit, imaging is used to map the exact treatment area and design your personalized radiation plan.

During each treatment visit:

You will lie comfortably on a treatment table.
A radiation machine will move around you.
Treatment sessions usually last only a few minutes.

Most patients return home the same day. Your care team closely monitors your progress and helps manage common radiation therapy side effects, such as fatigue and mild skin irritation.
