Microdiscectomy

Microdiscectomy is one of the most common minimally invasive spine surgeries performed to relieve nerve pain in the lower back.

What is microdiscectomy?

A microdiscectomy removes the portion of a herniated disc that is pressing on a spinal nerve. Disc herniations in the lumbar spine often cause sciatica — pain, numbness or weakness that radiates down the leg.

Using magnification and specialized instruments, the surgeon removes only the damaged disc fragment while preserving surrounding bone and tissue.

When is microdiscectomy recommended?

Your surgeon may recommend microdiscectomy if:

  • Leg pain is severe or persistent

  • Numbness or weakness is worsening

  • Conservative treatments such as medication, physical therapy or injections have not helped

  • Imaging confirms nerve compression

What to expect during surgery

Microdiscectomy is performed under general anesthesia through a small incision in the lower back. Most procedures take about one hour. Many patients return home the same day.

Recovery and results

Leg pain often improves quickly. Mild soreness at the incision site is common. Most patients resume light activity within a few weeks and gradually return to full activity as healing continues.

Microdiscectomy Frequently Asked Questions

Will this relieve back pain or leg pain?
Microdiscectomy is most effective for leg pain caused by nerve compression.

Can the disc herniate again?
Reherniation is possible but uncommon.
