Developmental milestones

Every baby develops at their own pace, but during the first year you’ll likely see many exciting changes.

Common milestones include:

  • Babbling and making sounds

  • Beginning to crawl or move around

  • Holding their head up and gaining neck strength

  • Recognizing familiar faces and voices

  • Rolling over

  • Sitting up with or without support

  • Smiling and responding to interaction

If you ever have concerns about your baby’s development, your pediatric provider can help evaluate milestones and offer guidance.

Feeding and nutrition

Newborns grow rapidly and need regular feeding to support their development.

Most babies are fed either breast milk or formula during the first months of life. As your baby grows, your pediatric provider may recommend introducing solid foods around 6 months of age.

Helpful feeding tips include:

  • Burping your baby during and after feedings

  • Feeding on demand when your baby shows hunger cues

  • Introducing new foods one at a time when solids begin

  • Watching for signs that your baby is full

Your pediatric provider can help answer questions about feeding schedules, formula choices and introducing solid foods.

Sleep

Sleep patterns change frequently during the first year. Newborns may sleep 14 to 17 hours each day, though usually in short periods.

Safe sleep is essential for your baby’s health. Recommended practices include:

  • Always placing your baby on their back to sleep

  • Keeping the crib free of pillows, blankets and toys

  • Sharing a room with your baby, but not the same bed

  • Using a firm mattress with a fitted sheet

Creating a consistent bedtime routine can also help your baby develop healthy sleep habits over time.

Physical activity

Even before babies begin crawling or walking, movement plays an important role in development.

Activities that support healthy growth include:

  • Allowing supervised tummy time each day

  • Encouraging reaching and grasping

  • Giving your baby space to move and explore safely

  • Talking, singing and interacting with your baby

These simple activities help strengthen muscles and support brain development.
