Knee Replacement

Knee Replacement

Knee replacement surgery — also known as knee arthroplasty — involves removing damaged portions of the knee joint and replacing them with artificial components. The new joint is designed to move smoothly and reduce pain, helping restore mobility and improve quality of life.

For many patients living with chronic knee pain, knee replacement surgery offers lasting relief when other treatments are no longer effective.

Why would I need knee replacement surgery?

Severe and persistent knee pain, stiffness and swelling are often caused by degenerative joint conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, as well as traumatic injuries. Over time, these conditions can significantly limit mobility and interfere with daily activities.

Knee replacement surgery may be considered when medications, injections or conservative treatments — such as physical therapy — no longer provide adequate relief. An evaluation with an orthopedic specialist can help determine whether knee replacement is appropriate based on your symptoms, joint damage and overall health.

Tanner Orthopedics is recognized with Disease-Specific Care (DSC) certification from The Joint Commission for knee replacement, a distinction that reflects excellence in joint replacement care.

Types of knee replacement surgery

The knee joint is made up of three primary components: the thigh bone (femur), shinbone (tibia) and kneecap (patella). Depending on which parts of the joint are damaged, surgeons may recommend:

Total knee replacement
This procedure replaces all three areas of the knee joint and is typically recommended when arthritis or injury affects the entire joint.

Partial knee replacement
If damage is limited to one area of the knee, a partial knee replacement may be performed to preserve healthy bone and tissue while addressing the affected portion.

Your orthopedic surgeon will recommend the most appropriate option based on your individual condition and activity goals.

What to expect during knee replacement surgery

In this video, Gregory Slappey, MD, orthopedic surgeon with OrthoWest, explains the knee replacement process and how robotic-assisted technology is improving patient outcomes.

Recovery from knee replacement surgery

Patients can usually walk immediately after surgery and can return to doing daily activities within the first couple weeks following surgery. Full recovery — including rebuilding strength and flexibility — may take several months. Factors such as age, overall health and adherence to rehabilitation recommendations can influence the recovery timeline.

How long does a knee replacement last?

In most cases, modern knee replacements are designed to last 15 to 20 years or longer. Longevity depends on factors such as activity level, weight, overall health and how well post-surgical recommendations are followed.

Advances in implant materials and surgical techniques continue to improve the durability of both total knee replacement and partial knee replacement procedures. Your orthopedic specialist can discuss what you can expect based on your individual health and lifestyle.

Mako Robotic-arm Assisted Surgery System

For certain total and partial knee replacement procedures, surgeons at Tanner Orthopedics may use the Mako Robotic-arm Assisted Surgery System.

What is Mako?

Mako is an advanced surgical system that uses CT-based 3-D modeling and virtual planning technology to create a personalized surgical plan tailored to your unique anatomy.

Before surgery, your orthopedic surgeon develops a detailed operative plan. During the procedure, the Mako system provides precision-guided assistance to help ensure accurate implant placement and joint alignment.

This technology is designed to support consistent outcomes, improved joint function and a smoother recovery experience.

Not every patient is a candidate for Mako-assisted surgery, and your orthopedic surgeon will determine the approach that is right for you.
