Knee Surgery

When knee pain keeps you from doing the activities you enjoy, the orthopedic specialists at Tanner Orthopedics are here to help. We offer a range of knee surgery options — including knee arthroscopy, anterior crucial ligament (ACL) repair or reconstruction, meniscus surgery, patellar realignment procedures, knee osteotomy and knee replacement — designed to relieve pain, restore stability and improve mobility.

Our team takes time to understand your symptoms, explain your treatment options and develop a care plan tailored to your needs and goals. In many cases, we begin with nonsurgical treatments and recommend surgery only when those approaches are no longer effective.

What is knee surgery?

Knee surgery includes procedures used to diagnose, repair or restore structures in and around the knee joint when nonsurgical treatments are not enough to relieve symptoms.

The goal of knee surgery is to:

  • Reduce pain
  • Improve stability
  • Restore movement and function

Many knee procedures are performed using knee arthroscopy, a minimally invasive technique that uses small incisions and a small camera to diagnose and treat problems inside the joint.

Nonsurgical treatment options

Many knee conditions can be treated without surgery. Depending on your symptoms and diagnosis, your care team may recommend conservative treatments such as:

  • Physical therapy to improve strength and flexibility
  • Activity modification to reduce strain on the knee
  • Anti-inflammatory medications as recommended by your clinician
  • Bracing or supportive devices
  • Injections to reduce inflammation or relieve pain

If symptoms continue despite these treatments, surgery may be recommended to address the underlying problem.

When to consider knee surgery

Knee surgery may be recommended when pain or instability continues to affect your daily life despite conservative treatment.

You may benefit from an orthopedic evaluation if you experience:

  • Persistent knee pain that limits daily activities
  • Knee locking, catching or clicking
  • Recurrent swelling or stiffness
  • Instability or the feeling that the knee may give way
  • Difficulty bending or straightening the knee

Imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI scans help orthopedic specialists determine the cause of symptoms and identify the most appropriate treatment.

Knee surgeries we offer

Orthopedic surgeons at Tanner Orthopedics perform several types of knee procedures depending on your condition.

  • Knee arthroscopy - A minimally invasive procedure that uses a small camera and instruments to diagnose and treat problems inside the knee joint. Arthroscopy may be used to repair a meniscus tear, remove loose fragments or smooth damaged cartilage.
  • Meniscus surgery - Meniscus tears may be treated with either meniscus repair, which preserves the cartilage, or partial meniscectomy, which removes the damaged portion when repair is not possible.
  • ACL repair or reconstruction - ACL injuries can cause knee instability during activities involving pivoting or sudden direction changes. Surgical treatment may involve repairing the ligament or reconstructing it using a graft.
  • Lateral release or patellar realignment - These procedures correct kneecap tracking problems that may cause pain or repeated dislocations.
  • Knee osteotomy - A knee osteotomy realigns the leg to shift weight away from a damaged area of the knee joint, which may reduce pain and delay the need for knee replacement.
  • Knee replacement surgery - For patients with advanced arthritis or severe joint damage, knee replacement surgery may be recommended. Damaged portions of the knee joint are replaced with artificial components designed to restore smoother movement and relieve pain.

Recovery after surgery

Recovery depends on the type of procedure performed. Many arthroscopic procedures allow patients to return home the same day, while more complex surgeries may require a short hospital stay.

Physical therapy plays an important role in recovery by helping restore motion, strength and stability. Most patients gradually return to daily activities over several weeks, although full recovery for ligament reconstruction or alignment procedures may take several months.
