Trauma-Informed Care for Victims of Violence

The Emergency Department at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton provides 24/7 forensic medical care for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, human trafficking and other violent trauma. Our specially trained clinicians deliver compassionate, trauma-informed care in a private, supportive environment.

Tanner’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are certified forensic nurses trained in emergency medicine, evidence collection and survivor advocacy. Patients receive respectful, confidential care whether or not they choose to involve law enforcement.

Forensic Medical Services

Sexual Assault Exams by Certified SANEs

Certified SANEs are available 24/7 to provide forensic medical exams for survivors of sexual assault. Exams take place in a private, secure setting and may include injury assessment, forensic evidence collection with consent, STI prevention and treatment, and emergency contraception.

Domestic Violence Injury Documentation

Our forensic nursing team evaluates and documents injuries related to intimate partner violence, physical abuse and elder abuse. We also connect patients with safety resources, advocacy services and follow-up care.

Human Trafficking Support and Intervention

Emergency Department staff are trained to recognize signs of human trafficking and provide discreet, trauma-informed support. Patients receive medical treatment, safety planning assistance and referrals to community support services.

Law Enforcement and Legal Coordination

With patient consent, our SANE team works with law enforcement and prosecutors to collect and preserve forensic evidence. Our nurses are also trained to provide courtroom testimony when needed while prioritizing patient dignity and privacy.

Crisis Advocacy and Community Resources

Tanner partners with regional advocacy organizations to connect survivors with crisis counseling, shelter referrals, legal assistance and victim advocacy services.
