Paying for Hospice

Paying for Hospice

Tanner Hospice Care is covered under most private insurance plans and Medicare and Medicaid in Georgia.

Additionally, private donations and community support allow us to provide hospice services based on need rather than the ability to pay.

What is covered under Medicare hospice care?

Medicare hospice care is designed to provide comfort and support for individuals with a terminal illness or life-limiting condition.

Services focus on enhancing quality of life and may include:

  • Medical care and nursing support
  • Pain and symptom management
  • Counseling and emotional support for patients and families
  • Prescription medications related to the terminal illness
  • Medical equipment and supplies necessary for care

The primary goal is to alleviate suffering, maintain dignity and allow patients to remain in the comfort of their home or a hospice facility.

How long will Medicare cover hospice care?

Medicare covers hospice care as long as a physician certifies that the patient has a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness follows its normal course.

Coverage begins with two 90-day periods, followed by unlimited 60-day periods, provided the patient continues to meet hospice eligibility criteria. The hospice team and physician regularly assess the patient’s condition to ensure ongoing eligibility, allowing individuals to receive continuous, compassionate care for as long as it is medically appropriate.

Paying for hospice without Medicare

If Medicare coverage is not available, there are several other ways to fund hospice care:

  • Private health insurance: Some plans may cover hospice services. Check with your insurance provider for details.
  • Medicaid: Coverage varies by state, so contact your state Medicaid office for eligibility and benefits.
  • Long-term care insurance: Certain policies may include hospice coverage; review your plan carefully.
  • Out-of-pocket payments: Many providers offer sliding scale fees or financial assistance programs.
  • Veterans benefits: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs may provide hospice support for eligible veterans.
  • Charitable organizations: Local and national nonprofits may offer grants or financial help for hospice care.
  • Medicare Advantage plans: Some Medicare Advantage plans may also include hospice benefits; verify with your plan.

A hospice provider or financial counselor can guide you through options, help navigate insurance and identify resources to make care more affordable. Tanner Hospice Care is committed to ensuring comfort, dignity and support for patients and families — regardless of their financial situation.
