Heart Tests and Procedures

At Tanner Heart Care, our dedicated heart care team provides an extensive array of diagnostic tests to accurately identify heart conditions:

Ablation

Ablation uses a catheter with a small wire to create targeted scars in the heart areas responsible for arrhythmias. This procedure is essential in treating supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia and premature ventricular contractions.

Angiography

Angiography, also called a cardiac catheterization, involves inserting a catheter into the heart via a large artery. It assesses blood flow in the coronary arteries, measures pressures within the heart chambers, evaluates valve function and detects any abnormalities in heart wall motion.

Cardiac Calcium Scoring

This test uses a CT scan to measure calcified plaque in the coronary arteries and provides a "calcium score." A higher score may indicate atherosclerosis or coronary artery disease (CAD).

Cardiac CT scan

A cardiac CT scan uses X-rays and advanced computing to produce detailed 3D images of the heart and blood vessels, assisting in accurate diagnosis.

Cardiac PET/CT

Combining PET scans with cardiac CT, this diagnostic method uses a radioactive tracer to produce highly detailed images, facilitating early detection of cardiac issues

Carotid ultrasound

Using sound waves, this test generates images of the carotid arteries in the neck, identifying any narrowing caused by plaque that could lead to a stroke.

Coronary intravascular lithotripsy (IVL)

IVL is used before stent placement to open narrowed coronary arteries with the Shockwave system. The procedure breaks up calcification to restore blood flow, followed by angioplasty and stenting.

CardioMEMS™ HF System

The CardioMEMS™ HF System facilitates proactive heart failure management by remotely monitoring pulmonary artery pressure, enabling timely medical interventions.

Echocardiogram

This noninvasive test uses sound waves to create a detailed image of the heart, assessing heart function and detecting potential problems.

Fractional Flow Reserve

Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) is a technique that measures blood pressure and coronary artery flow, assisting in determining the need for procedures such as angioplasty or stenting to improve heart blood flow.

Holter monitor

A Holter monitor records heartbeats over 24 to 48 hours, providing valuable data on heart rhythm during daily activities for physician analysis.

MRA/MRI

MRI and MRA use magnets, radio frequencies, and computers to produce detailed images of the heart and blood vessels, supporting comprehensive diagnostics.

Nuclear stress test

This test uses radioactive tracers to create images of the heart under stress, simulating the effects of exercise for those unable to perform physical exertion.

Pacemaker implantation

A pacemaker is inserted beneath the collarbone to regulate the heart rhythm. This outpatient procedure helps manage the heart's electrical issues.

Pulmonary embolism thrombectomy

Pulmonary embolism is treated with the Inari FlowTriever device, which removes clots from pulmonary arteries without thrombolytic drugs, offering a swift recovery.

Rotational atherectomy

This minimally invasive procedure treats coronary artery disease by using a diamond-coated burr to remove plaque and restore blood flow.

Stress test

During a stress test, heart function is monitored while exercising on a treadmill, helping detect coronary artery disease and determine safe exercise levels after heart events.

Tilt table test

This test assesses how changes in position affect blood pressure and pulse rates, identifying potential causes of fainting or dizziness.

Heart Testing Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of a cardiac calcium scoring test?
This test measures calcified plaque in the coronary arteries to assess the risk of coronary artery disease.

How does a Holter monitor work?
A Holter monitor records heartbeats over 24 to 48 hours to detect irregular rhythms during daily activities.

What conditions can an echocardiogram detect?
An echocardiogram assesses heart function and can detect conditions such as valve problems or heart enlargement.

What is the significance of the CardioMEMS HF System?
It enables remote monitoring of heart failure progression, providing critical data to proactively adjust treatment.
