Early Heart Attack Care

Early Heart Attack Care

The information below about Early Heart Attack Care (EHAC) is shared from the American College of Cardiology website.

Early heart attack symptoms

Heart attack symptoms can vary significantly from the dramatic portrayals seen on television. Many individuals overlook early heart attack signs, dismissing them as minor issues. Ignoring these early indicators can result in missing a crucial "window of opportunity" to prevent a heart attack before heart damage occurs. Be vigilant for these signs in yourself and your family members.

Shortness of breath without exertion

Experiencing shortness of breath during routine activities can be a warning sign of a heart attack. It's important to investigate this symptom if it occurs without exertion, as it could indicate a serious issue.

Heartburn

Heartburn or a burning feeling in the chest is often caused by spicy foods. However, if this sensation persists, it may indicate a serious issue, such as a heart attack. Frequent use of over-the-counter antacids should prompt a consultation with your doctor.

Discomfort or pain

Heart attack pain isn't limited to the chest area. Some individuals report early symptoms of crushing, squeezing or pressure in the chest or other body parts, such as the shoulders, neck and jaw. If you experience these types of pain, seek immediate medical attention, even if symptoms are sporadic or disappear.

A feeling of impending doom

Some patients report feelings of anxiety and fear before a heart attack. While this is not widely recognized as an early symptom, it may serve as an indicator, especially when combined with other symptoms listed above.

Learn hands-only CPR

Hands-only CPR is a life-saving skill. Most people who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting die due to a lack of immediate CPR.

If a teen or adult suddenly collapses, call 911, perform hard, fast chest compressions in the center of the chest and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) if available.
