What this guide includes

This booklet offers helpful instructions that will:

  • Help you prepare for your procedure
  • Provide important preoperative dietary and preparation instructions
  • Help you communicate with family and caretakers about your procedure
  • Describe what will occur on the day of your surgery
  • Explain what to expect after your procedure during recovery
  • Provide maps, directions and important key contact information
 

Your surgical checklist

What to bring:

  • List of allergies
  • Photo ID and insurance card
  • Relevant documents from your physician
  • Copy of advance directive or living will (if applicable)
  • Assistive devices such as braces, crutches or CPAP/BiPAP machines
 

What to do:

  • Expect a call or text from a nurse with your arrival time.
  • Take medications as instructed by your pre surgical team.
  • Follow the eating and drinking guidelines from your pre op nurse.
  • Arrange for a caregiver to stay with you for at least 24 hours after your procedure.
  • Bathe as directed and remove jewelry, piercings, nail polish and makeup.
  • Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing.
  • Avoid alcohol, drugs and tobacco products 24 hours prior to your surgery.
 

What NOT to do:

  • Do not shave around the surgical area within 48 hours of surgery.
 

Call your physician if…

Contact your physician before surgery if you experience any of the following:

  • Diarrhea or vomiting
  • Excessive bleeding through bandages
  • Fever (greater than 100.5°F)
  • Rash, skin irritation or any other unusual health changes
 

Day of your procedure

  • Friends and family wait in the waiting room during preparation.
  • You may arrive 2–3 hours before surgery time.
  • Staff will assist with pre op preparations (gown, ID band vital checks).
  • The anesthesia team will review your anesthesia plan and answer questions.
 

After your procedure

  • Your physician will discuss the outcome with your family or caregiver.
  • Recovery in the Short Stay Unit before discharge home.
  • Follow up on care instructions and prescriptions provided before you leave.
  • Ask any remaining questions of your nurse or surgeon.
 

Post-procedure home care

  • A discharge nurse reviews your instructions with your caregiver.
  • Medications will be prescribed electronically to your pharmacy.
  • Follow dietary recommendations during recovery.
  • Rest as directed; avoid driving, making legal decisions or operating machinery.
  • Take steps to reduce fall risk at home. 
 

Pain management and activity

  • Pain levels vary; talk with your care team about pain control methods.
  • Describe your pain accurately to help your care team tailor treatment.
  • Limited activity encouraged for the first 24 hours; increase as tolerated.
 

When to seek immediate care

Call 911 or return to the hospital if you experience:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Severe or worsening pain
  • Fainting, or signs of significant medical concern
