Understanding psychiatric care

Psychiatric care is centered on diagnosing, treating and managing mental health conditions using medical and therapeutic approaches. Our team includes psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners trained to assess both psychological and biological components of mental health.

  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation
  • Diagnosis of mental health conditions
  • Medication management
  • Psychotherapy
  • Coordination with primary care and specialists
  • Telepsychiatry services

Psychotherapy

Psychiatric providers may offer psychotherapy or coordinate with licensed therapists as part of an integrated treatment plan. Combining medication and therapy often leads to stronger, longer-lasting outcomes. Evidence-based approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and more.

Telepsychiatry

Telepsychiatry allows patients to receive psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and some psychotherapy services via secure video appointments when clinically appropriate. Benefits include greater convenience, reduced travel time, and flexible scheduling.

Psychiatric care across the lifespan

Mental health needs change throughout life. Symptoms, diagnoses and treatment approaches often vary by developmental stage.

Anxiety in a child may look different than anxiety in an older adult. Depression in teens may present as irritability rather than sadness. Older adults may experience mood changes related to medical conditions or medication interactions.

Our providers evaluate mental health within the context of:

  • Age and developmental stage
  • Medical history
  • Family and social systems
  • Cognitive functioning
  • Life transitions
  • Substance use and sleep patterns

Treatment plans are individualized and adjusted as needs evolve over time.

How do I know if I need psychiatric care?

If you're experiencing symptoms such as depression, anxiety, mood instability, trauma, attention difficulties or substance use that interfere with daily functioning, a psychiatric evaluation can help determine the appropriate level of care.

Medication management

Medication can be a crucial part of treatment for certain mental health conditions. Our medication management includes prescribing appropriate psychiatric medications, monitoring effectiveness and side effects, adjusting dosages as needed and coordinating care with therapists and other providers.

Will I automatically be prescribed medication?

No, medication is recommended only when clinically appropriate. Some individuals benefit from therapy alone, while others may require a combination of medication and psychotherapy.
